Stop, Think and Do

Stop, Think and Do - Room 14 from Team 4 Pes on Vimeo.
At Pt England School we have special koreros that we use everyday to help us keep on the right track. Stop, think and do helps us to have a good think about what is the best choice to make when we are faced with a problem.

Some children in Room 14 wanted to make a movie for Mr Burt using the PES Stop, Think and Do song. The original track is by the New Zealand artist Mareko.

Fingers crossed we win the competition, we hope you enjoy! :)

Haiku Poetry

This week Room 14 have been learning all about haiku poetry. We all learned the '575' rule. Five syllables in the first line, seven in the next line, and five int he last line. It sounds easy, but it does involve a lot of thinking!

Here are some awesome examples below:

Room 14 Beach Movie - Manaiakalani Film Festival

This year students in Room 14 worked together to come up with ideas for our movie. Their were many of great ideas, but the one that stood out the most was creating a musical based on 'Teen Beach Movie'.

The ideas were great, however there was a lot of planning, practicing, filming, recording and editing to do!

Here are some of the skills that the Room 14 film crew had to develop during the process of LEARN, CREATE, SHARE:

LEARN
  • Use google docs to communicate and plan ideas for the movie
  • Collaborate with other students to plan songs and dance choreography
  • Study and learn the songs and dance movements
  • Teach and guide students the chosen songs and dances

CREATE
  • Use Garage Band to record and edit voiceovers and songs
  • Use the flip cameras to film scenes
  • Use Hyperstudio to draw background images for greenscreen
  • Use iMovie to edit the final scenes

SHARE
  • Upload to vimeo
  • Share to Manaiakalani cluster school at the Film Festival
  • Share to the world through our blogs

Well done to Room 14 for such a great job on this year's movie, and an extra special thumbs up to Junior and May who came up with the concept and were the brains behind our movie!

How Gelatin Is Made by Quinlan

My Boring Holiday by Junior

Have you ever stayed home watching TV and playing PS3 by yourself? Well I have. It’s so fun because you're allowed to play the game by yourself and and you don’t have to share! By the way, the game I was playing was Assassins Creed Brotherhood. It is so cool.

But I was so sad that my that my mum didn't take me to The Warehouse. So I just grabbed my blanket and the sky remote and started to watch Regular Show. Then I was punching my pillow like a lunatic.

I started to yawn, I was exhausted, so I went to bed and had little sleep. I woke up and my mum still wasn't home! So I got my controller and I started to kill the bad guy in the game, then I fell asleep again.

I woke up, and she still wasn't home! So I went outside and started to play touch with my friends. They were Joseph, Rocky, and Zavian. Then my mum was finally home. I was angry at her, but I still love her.

Performing Plays in Room 14

This week in Room 14 we have been learning to read with expression. Reading with expression means to read with different tones, sounding like the character, and not sounding like a half asleep robot!

First we read our plays with our group and Miss Ouano. Then we practiced reading the play with our group in a quiet place. We had to make sure when we were reading with our group we worked together and worked as a team.

Once we had practiced, we then presented our plays to our class! Performing in front of the class was really embarrassing and really nerve racking, but in the end it was loads of fun!

After our performance, we recorded ourselves reading our play’s using Audio Boo. We then posted our boo’s to our blogs, so that others can hear our expressive reading.

Reading with expression has helped us to learn many skills, here are some:
  • Understanding the story
  • Working well with a team
  • Expressing ourselves through drama
  • Performing confidently to an audience
  • Improving our oral language
And lastly having fun!

We hope you enjoyed hearing all about our learning! Be sure to leave a comment on our awesome blogs!

Holding a Friendly Conversation

Holding Friendly Conversations - 1080p from Team 4 Pes on Vimeo.
This morning in Room 14 we were working on our oral language. Miss Ouano was telling us all about holding a friendly conversation with someone.

We say 'holding' a friendly conversation because we when we talk to people we are trying to talk to them for a good amount of time without it being awkward.

Conversations usually start with questions and replies. A good conversation should have at least 6 lines or more.

Here are examples of our conversation below:

James:
This morning room 14 are leaning about holding a conversations. It means when someone is talking to you. Me and my partner where having a conversation. my partners name was Tylah and we were so happy when we finished. I hope you enjoy it and please leave a comment.

Making Movies in Maths Class

Maths in Room 14 is different this year. This year Room 14 and Room 13 cross group for maths. So that means that during maths time Room 14 and Room 13 are mixed into different maths classes!

One of the activities we do in Miss Ouano's maths class is make movies showing our understanding of our learning. When we finish our practice activities we get to work with a buddy to plan and film a movie showing how we solve different maths problems.

Here are few examples of our movies:

Creating E-Books in Room 14

Do you know what an e-book is? No its not an egg book, it is a 'electronic book'. This week Room Fourteen have been learning how to create an e-book using google presentation.

The week before Easter, Room Fourteen used Story Starters to find a prompt for their writing. Miss Ouano guided us through the structure, helped planned, and away we went writing.

After we had edited out writing, we marked with a buddy then with Miss Ouano. Then we used our writing to create an e-book using a template that Miss Ouano had prepared. We had to draw pictures for each page to show what was happening in each part.

Some of the prompts from Story Starters were hilarious! Check out some of our cool e-books below!

Making Movies on our Ipads

We are so lucky because Mr Burt has given us two new ipads! Now we are able to create and share our learning in a different way.

This week we were learning how to make movies of ourselves talking about our Omaru Creek maps. First we wrote a script for our movie, filmed it on the ipad, edited it using the imovie app, shared it to Vimeo, then finally embedded the movie on to our blogs!

Room 14 are so on to it that nearly the whole class filmed and edited their movies this week. Here are some examples below:

Embedding Photos from Flickr

This morning in Room 14, we were learning how to embed photos from Flickr. We learnt all about what a HTML code is, how to find it, and where to use it.

The photos we used, were taken at our local Omaru Creek during The River Talks show. The River Talks was held for our community to raise awareness of the bad state our river is in. People shared their experiences, opinions and thoughts about Omaru Creek.

Here are some examples of our amazing embedding skills:
